My Trip to Washington D.C
was pretty eventful....I managed to survive a few flashfloods, mudslides, tornadoes, and a State of Emergency...so here's how my week went
Monday-Woke up at 4:00 am to catch Robert Q Airbus to Detroit, where i waited for five hours before my flight, which they changed the gate four times, from Gate 4 to Gate 73 (like a half hour walk away)..during my wait i was watching CNN where they keep talking about this horrible flooding in the Northeast and sure enough...Washington D.C, Maryland and Virgina(which surround D.C) where hit hard...I fly into D.C and get to my hotel in Cheverly Maryland, to find out the hotel got flooded too...I got to my room which was nice...and unpacked, but before i went to bed that night, i touched the wall of my room and it was soaked, so was the carpet..my room was flooding with me in it! lol so they changed rooms..anyways i didn't have anything planned for monday so i watched t.v and the only thing on was news..and every channel kept talking about the floods and storms and missing persons..and how some of the Smithsonian Museums were closed adn the Metro(subway) was closed..so that was a stressful evening, i'm all upset cause i'm not sure i can do anything because of the weather..
Tuesday- Wake up at 7:00, get ready adn eat breakfast and catch the 9:00 shuttle to the Cheverly Metro Station..it's like a 100 degrees plus humidity..and it's raining and storming off and on...I go the the Holocause Museum..which was fantastically well done....very heart breaking and informative..I spend two hours in the Holocause exhibit..than i walk up to the Washington Monument, than the World War II Monument, walk past the Reflecting Pool and make my way up to the Lincoln Memorial in the incredible heat...i was drenched with sweat and i wasn't doing anything strenuous..i went to the Vietnam Memorial, and than made my way back to the Smithsonian Museums where i found out the Smithonsonian Natural History, American History, Archives, and National Art Gallery are all closed...i walk around D.C, finding my way to Ford's Theatre (closed) and around some other Federal Buildings..than i Head back because more storms are rolling in..they have tornadoes in maryland (where i was) and the mayor of D.C declares a State of Emergency cause the storms are still supposed to keep coming, but all the rivers have reached their peak....and dams are reading to burst.
Wednesday--wake up, get ready and go to the White House and the Renwick Gallery of Art before heading off to Georgetown, it's hot out, about 100 again, but the sun's out and there's a nice breeze..i walke along the C & O Canal, which is very nice, so is Georgetown, it's absolutly beautiful, stop at The Old Stone House, supposed to be the oldest house in the entire area, eat lunch than walk up hill to The Tudor Mansion, Martha Washington's Granddaughters mansion, take a tour of the house and gardens, than head back and go tothe Georgetown Mall, but don't do any shopping...head back to D.C and go to the Bertoldi Fountain (the man who designed the Statue of Liberty) and the Smithsonian Botanical Garden, and walk around the State Capitol, than decide after i get my second wind to walk to the Jefferson Memeriol, i make it to the tidal basin, but the Memorial is too far away..so i head back to the hotel for the night
Thursday--wake up go to the Washington Cathederal (7th largest Catherdial in the world) it's beautiful, do a tour there...than go to Dupont Circle, where they have trendy shops and stores and restaurants..than head back and go to the National Gallery of Art which has finally opened...and look around...i head back to the hotel early cause i'm doing a night tour which starts at 8:00pm..where go see Iwo Jima memorial..which is beautiful than we went to the white house and korean and vietnam memorial and Lincoln Memorials, we drive past Watergate and some other impressive bulidings, i don't get back until 11:30, andi have to be up at 6:00 to catch my cab back to the airport....
all in all despite the weather i had fun...the museums all opened on Friday when i left (go figure) except the Archives which sustained about 2million dollars worth of damage..9 people died in total along the Northeast coast..it was very scary being there alone....however, despite the damage you couldn't really tell that much was wrong in D.C..i had a blast and I don't regret going for one bit...i walked about 10-12 miles each day...and managed to actually gain 6 pounds..lol only i could do that! I'll post pictures in a bit..i have many!
